If the hit television series Shōgun had you on the edge of your seat, you'll love Japan's cinematic streets. Plus, for a limited time only, you can enjoy savings of up to 20% on Emirates Holidays packages to Japan with your Discovery Bank card.
No spoilers, Japan is a dream destination for film buffs and foodies alike. So, if you're dreaming of stepping into the world of Shōgun, following in the footsteps of legendary samurai, or indulging in iconic film-inspired meals, make Japan the next destination on your bucket list.
Spots to visit if you loved Shōgun
Based on the classic 1975 novel by James Clavell, Shōgun transports you into the heart of feudal Japan. So, if you enjoyed the show, you must visit:
- Himeji Castle, Japan's most beautifully preserved samurai castle set in Himeji in the Hyōgo Prefecture, which offers a close resemblance to the castles depicted in Shōgun.
- Nikko's Edo Wonderland, a historical theme park set in Nikkō, Tochigi, where visitors can experience the world of samurai, ninja, and traditional culture.
- Kamakura, a seaside city south of Tokyo that was once the centre of medieval Japan and samurai governance, knows for its stunning historical sites like the Great Buddha statue and Tsurugaoka Hachimangū Shrine.
Plus, if you were in awe of the traditional tea ceremonies depicted in the show, you can experience the centuries-old practice at various teahouses in Tokyo.
Iconic eats from Tokyo's cinematic streets
Sushi (Jiro Dreams of Sushi)
This documentary showcases the meticulous artistry of sushi-making, and fans can taste the pinnacle of Japanese sushi at Sukiyabashi Jiro, a sushi restaurant in Ginza, Tokyo, owned by the legendary chef Jiro Ono. Pro tip: this is a hot spot, so book months in advance!
Katsu curry (Your Name)
This heartwarming 2016 anime film features comforting Japanese dishes, including katsu curry, breaded and fried pork or chicken cutlets (katsu) served with Japanese curry sauce and rice. You can find katsu curry at humble restaurants across Japan. If you find yourself in Tokyo, try out Tonkyu Ueno, Mon Snack and Akihabara Caligari.
Onigiri (Spirited Away)
Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away features a heartfelt scene where Chihiro eats a simple rice ball, an embodiment of warmth and nourishment. You can pick up onigiri, a round or triangular rice ball wrapped in nori (seaweed), at most convenience stores or specialty shops across Japan.
Tan-men (Midnight Diner)
A comforting bowl of fresh ramen topped with sliced pork belly and vegetables, tan-men is perfect for a late-night meal. You can find similar dishes at Yasudaya Shinjuku Honten, a diner in Tokyo similar to the fictional izakaya in Midnight Diner, or visit Tokyo's famous ramen streets like Sugamo or Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku (a district you'll recognise from Haruki Murakami's novels!)
New York Bar cuisine (Lost in Translation)
If you visit the famous Park Hyatt hotel in Shinjuku, Tokyo, you can enjoy the same delicious cocktails and fine dining with exquisite views as the characters do in the 2003 romantic comedy starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. You can also visit Jugan-ji Temple in Shinjuku or the Heian Shrine in Kyoto, where they filmed some of the scenes.
