No, Flexicare is not a medical aid. Medical schemes are governed by the Medical Schemes Act. Under this Act, all schemes must pay for a basic level of care for 27 chronic conditions and 270 diseases. These are called Prescribed Minimum Benefits, or PMBs. As a member of a medical scheme, you pay a monthly contribution for financial cover for your medical expenses. The amount you pay depends on the medical plan you have chosen. Medical aid membership costs more than health insurance because it gives you access to a wider range of benefits and cover options, from cover for healthcare like visits to doctors, nurses, dentists, optometrists and so on, all the way to covering hospital stays. To avoid paying over and above your monthly premium to access care, you may have to use healthcare providers and facilities that belong to your medical scheme's networks - again this depends on the medical plan you have chosen. Contributions to a medical aid are tax deductible in South Africa.

Flexicare is a health insurance product. Health or medical insurance is governed by long-term and short-term insurance laws. Health insurance pays out a set amount for your medical expenses. To keep health insurance products affordable, they focus mostly on out-of-hospital, everyday healthcare expenses such as going for a consultation with a nurse or doctor, getting medicine, and basic dentistry. Usually, they have rules about using specific healthcare providers in their network. If you don't use these providers, then the health insurance won't pay out. Some health or medical insurance products include a fixed payout for being stabilised in hospital in an emergency. Health or medical insurance can also include additional cover options, such as emergency cover for trauma and accidents. These extra benefits may cost you a little more each month.

As the administrator for Flexicare and Discovery Health Medical Scheme, Discovery Health ensures that your claims are paid timeously and your membership administration and servicing is delivered. As the medical scheme and health insurance are separate products, each product has its own plan range, benefits and membership information. So not to add an administrative burden on you to determine which products should provide cover for different services, we do not allow members to be on both products at the same time.

No, Flexicare is a health or medical insurance product that provides cover with South Africa. Therefore, Flexicare may not be appropriate to use for your visa application.

If you experience a trauma or accident event and have Discovery Emergency Cover you can go to any casualty unit for treatment where you will be treated for the medical emergency and be stabilised in order for you to be discharged. Additional cover is available through Discovery Emergency Cover if you need in-hospital emergency medical care. This cover depends on your chosen Discovery Emergency Cover plan.
