Technology-enabled risk management

Smartphone-enabled DQ-Track

Recognised through various international awards, the smartphone-enabled DQ-Track, our advanced telematics technology, is a game-changer in the world of motor insurance. By using this technology, we're able to offer our clients the very best safety features, as well as measure their driving, and reward them for driving well.

The smartphone-enabled DQ-Track is made up of two components - the Discovery Insure smartphone app and the Vitality Drive Sensor. It is easy to install on a compatible smartphone, and offers state-of-the-art safety features.

The smartphone-enabled DQ-Track measures the following aspects of driver behaviour: acceleration, braking, cornering, speed, time and location of the trip, distance, and cellphone use. The information is used to determine the driving score and provide a complete measure of driving behaviour.

The smartphone-enabled DQ-Track provides a range of advanced safety features

Impact Alert

Impact Alert is a smartphone-enabled DQ-Track feature that keeps your drivers safe on the road by providing emergency assistance when we detect a severe impact on your vehicle/s, even if we can't get hold of the driver/s. Impact Alert will work as long as the vehicle's DQ-Track is functioning and the driver is in an area with cellular network coverage.

Vehicle panic button

With our Vehicle panic button, your drivers can alert us if they're in an emergency situation. It's available if you have installed and activated the smartphone-enabled DQ-Track.

It works when the driver presses their smartphone's power button in quick succession (at least five times) for Android operating system or presses the 'panic' button (on the dashboard in the Discovery Insure app) for iOS operating system. Your smartphone must be connected to your Vitality Drive Sensor to use it as a vehicle panic button.

Weather Warnings

Using weather data combined with DQ-Track location data, we warn your drivers of imminent bad weather by SMS, for example, when a large hailstorm is approaching, where it would be safer for your vehicle/s to be parked under a roof and not driving on the road.*

Find my vehicles

Through the fleet portal (offered by the smartphone-enabled DQ-Track), you can find and track all your vehicles in real time.

Third-party telematics devices

Clients can also use Discovery approved telematics devices offered by Ctrack or Netstar to enable us to measure their driving behaviour. Clients will need to give us permission to access their driving behaviour, at quotation stage and will need to ensure that their devices are always in working condition.

Clients who make use of third-party devices will benefit from the rewards for driving well, but will not have access to the safety features provided by the smartphone-enabled DQ-Track.

Customised risk management using technology

Our skilled risk engineering team consisting of professional engineers, assist clients to evaluate the risk at their business premises and present those risks and any risk improvement measures to the client and broker. The results of the risk assessment is also used for underwriting purposes. The risk survey will be required for certain businesses depending on an initial assessment of risk.

Technology-enabled risk surveys provide a more accurate risk assessment

When carrying out the surveys, our engineers will use advanced technology including thermal imaging and a mobile onsite risk assessment tool.

  • Thermal imaging allows us to detect hidden electrical faults.
  • We also use mobile onsite risk assessment tool, which allows for instant survey results and quicker production of survey reports.

The risk engineering team will provide the broker and client with an interactive risk assessment report which allows one to navigate between the different sections of the report. The report will include a summary of the risk assessment and risk-improvement advice based on the survey results.
