Counter tired driving with these tips

Have you ever driven while feeling a little drowsy? You’re not alone – 20% of all accidents are caused by driver tiredness. In the UK, for example, at least one in every five deaths on the road is caused by tired drivers. So what can we do to reduce our tiredness while we drive?

Work with your natural sleep cycle

It might seem rather silly to mention it, but stinting your tiredness starts with getting enough sleep. Try get at least seven hours of proper sleep before you set off on your journey. The fact that most of the accidents that are caused by sleep-deprived drivers happen between midnight and 06:00 – the time that we are naturally supposed to be sleeping – comes as no surprise then. So if you really need to drive during these hours and you struggle to keep your eyes open, pull over, if it’s safe to do so, and take a break.

Don’t fall for any myths that promise to keep you awake

Yes, the odd energy or caffeinated drink can do wonders to make you feel a little more awake. But if you happen to be a regular coffee drinker, these drinks can actually have the opposite effect. Studies have also shown that relying on loud music, chewing gum, fresh air or stretching actually does nothing to keep you awake while you’re behind the wheel. There is nothing that can replace proper sleep.

Plan ahead

If you’re planning to drive for long, plan your trip ahead of time and decide on pit stops along the way. No towns along the way? No problem. There are lots of fuel stations along any road which not only offers you the opportunity for a break, but also a place to fill your car’s tank and stock up on some snacks. Take at least one 20 minute break for every two hours of driving to keep your mind refreshed and awake.

Share the responsibility

It might not always be the nicest thing to do if you like being in control but, if it is possible, share the driving with someone who is a responsible driver. This gives your mind and eyes a welcome break from the road and even an opportunity to nap.

Don’t underestimate the effect that being tired has on your driving ability. The stats speak for themselves when it comes to the amount of accidents and deaths that are caused simply because of fatigued driving. Make sleep your top priority before setting out on any journey.
