An HIV test is either a set of blood tests, oral swab test or finger prick test used to diagnose infection with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. If the test is positive, it will have to be confirmed with a second blood test.

What to know before the test
- No physical preparation is necessary for the test, but you must have professional counselling before the test.
Paying for the HIV test
- Members of selected medical schemes administered by Discovery Health will be covered from the Screening Benefit.
Vitality points
- All adults (older than 18) earn 7 500 Vitality points in the first year they screen for HIV as Vitality members then 1000 Vitality points once a year thereafter.
- If you are claiming the cost of this test from a medical scheme administered by Discovery Health you do not need to submit proof as points will be awarded automatically. Please allow 7 days for your points to reflect.
- If not, submit proof that you had the test done on the Claim Vitality Points page for your points to be awarded. Please allow 48 hours for processing, you can then check that these points have been awarded on your Vitality Points Tracker.
- Please note: you only need to submit proof that the test was done, and not the results themselves. You will only be awarded points for one HIV test a year. Please note you will only be awarded points for the HIV test once a year.
