Here's how clients can get their car roadworthy for the holidays

Are your clients sure that their car is in the best condition possible for the road during the upcoming holidays? We've got them covered with a handy checklist and list of the best go-to places where they can make the most of their discounts as a Vitality Drive member. Be sure to let them know.

A vehicle that isn't in the best driving condition isn't entirely safe - or legal. In fact, all new and used cars on the roads in South Africa must legally have an up-to-date roadworthy certificate.

It's therefore important for your clients to be aware of how their car functions and to learn how to spot potential problems that could be hazardous while they're driving. If they can spot an issue early enough, they can easily have it repaired before it really becomes problematic (and unsafe).

We have included a quick checklist below for your clients to use when inspecting their vehicles.

Keeping the car in its best condition with Vitality Drive

While it's great to know what to look out for on a car oneself, clients also have access to accredited professionals who can do thorough checks for them. If they spot anything questionable or troublesome, they should note it and let the mechanic know at their inspection.

It is especially important for your clients to have their vehicles thoroughly checked before taking any long road trips, and they should book the car in for an inspection at an accredited centre at least two weeks beforehand. This way, they can ensure that any repairs can be done without hassle or stress.

How clients can use their benefits as a Vitality Drive member to ensure their car is roadworthy

  1. Use Discovery Drive Centres and Tiger Wheel & Tyre:

Clients can use the Annual Multipoint Check - it's a great way to ensure their car remains safe to drive because everything for roadworthiness is checked at once. The check inspects all main functions including the steering wheel, headlights, hooter, indicators and tyres.

Clients get up to 100 points for passing the check and an extra 50 points if the service history is up to date.

If your clients need new tyres, they can also save up to 20% on new tyre purchases at Tiger Wheel & Tyre. And if they have been accumulating their fuel cash back in their Insure Funder account, they can opt to fund up to 100% of the tyres using their fund balance.

  2. Use Bosch servicing and maintenance:

As a Vitality Drive member, your client can receive an up to 20% discount when they use our servicing partner, Bosch, based on their Vitality Drive status. *Hint: Driving well earns clients a higher level of discount.

Both their cover and Vitality Drive membership must be active to qualify for the discount.

Also, if clients have added Discovery Insure Vehicle Warranty to their plan, they can get up to 100% off their servicing and maintenance costs at a Bosch service centre.

Here is a quick vehicle roadworthy checklist that you can share with your clients
The basics for keeping a car in good roadworthy condition
Lights
  • Check all lights work - including headlights, taillights, brake lights, indicators and ignition lights - and that they are secure.
  • Check both low and high beam functions are correctly adjusted to see (as the driver) and be seen (by others) properly.
Windscreen and windows
  • Check the windscreen and other windows have no chips or cracks.
  • Check windscreen wipers operate well, without worn-out blades.
  • Check all windows open and close well without getting stuck.
Tyres and brakes
  • Ensure wheels and tyres are correctly sized and meet the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Check all tyres (and the spare) have enough tread without wearing down - 1.6 mm minimum is South Africa's legal depth.
  • Check that the tyre pressure is correct.
  • Ensure wheel bearings run smoothly.
  • Check all brakes - brake discs shouldn't be grooved or concave. Note any scraping noises or squeaks (typically meaning the brakes may need replacing). A vibration under the brake pedal could mean brake discs are warped.
  • Check the parking brake.
  • Check that the hydraulics have no leaks.
Engine and transmission
  • Check the engine compartment has no damage or leaks.
  • Check the engine and transmission mountings are intact.
  • Check the battery is secured properly.
  • Check the battery is clean and charged, and has no cracks, leaks or signs of corrosion.
  • Ensure the engine has no loose or damaged wires.
  • Ensure the exhaust mountings are secure.
  • Check the exhaust (no excessive smoke).
  • Check the transmission.
  • Check the water, oil, coolant, power steering, brakes and other fluids are at the correct levels.
  • Check all filters, hoses and pipes (for oil, air and fuel systems) aren't damaged - and that fuel and oil caps are secure.
Bonus check: Licences
  • Make sure that an up-to-date vehicle licence disk is on the windscreen.
  • Ensure a valid driving licence is with the driver.
