Screening and prevention

Catch possible problems early

Preventive screenings are important because they make sure you detect possible medical conditions early so we can make sure you get the best care.

The Screening and Preventive Benefit pays for specific tests without having the cost deducted from the General Benefit Pool or using money in your Medical Savings Account. While we pay for screening tests from the Screening and Preventive Benefit, we pay the consultation cost (if there is one) from your day-to-day benefits.

If you use a provider in our network, we cover the cost in full. You have to pay the difference if your healthcare provider charges more than the Scheme Rate.

Health check

You have cover for two health checks a year. As part of health check, a wellness specialist checks:

  • Blood sugar
  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol
  • Body mass index (BMI)

We only cover the full cost of the health check if you have all the checks done on the same day at a pharmacy in our wellness network. To find network pharmacy, visit www.discovery.co.za.

You have cover for these tests:

  • One mammogram every two years
  • One Pap smear every three years
  • One prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test every three years
