Road trip do’s and don’ts

Summer is here and with it comes the December holidays. Road trips are a wonderful way to travel to your holiday destination and explore our beautiful country. So make sure that your trip is worry-free: don’t leave home without going through this trusty list.

Do stick to the speed limit

And stick to it even when you’re overtaking other vehicles. Not only will this keep you safe, but also keeps you from returning home to a pile of speeding fines after a relaxing holiday.

Don’t forget the essentials

Make sure to make a list of things you’d need, like your driver’s licence, in-car phone charger, wallet, cash and medical aid cards.

Do make sure that your car is ready to hit the road

Take your car for a service or for a quick once-over before you drive off to your holiday destination. Also make time to check the oil, lights, wiper condition, tyre pressure and so on before you head off.

Don’t forget to plan

Plan your route and pit stops. Get out of the car and stretch those legs.

Do pack your car smartly

Don’t overload your car with luggage, perhaps even limiting your passengers to one bag each. Make sure that luggage is not piled so high that you can’t see anything in your rear view mirror and that you have essentials, like your wallet, and a snack basket in easy reach. There’s nothing more frustrating than realising you need something and then having to unpack everything again to locate the item!

Don’t get reckless in rainy or misty weather

Once again, mind your speed - it can save your life.

Do remember to take a few precautionary items

Put items like a first-aid kit, wet wipes, a toilet roll, and a GPS in a convenient location in your car for easy access.

Don’t forget to buckle up at all times

Make sure that everyone else in the car is also wearing their seatbelt. Never start that car up unless everyone is buckled up for the trip.

Do make sure your pet is also ready for the road

Have the right crate, accessories and snacks for your pet if they’re travelling along with you. Speak to your vet if you have any doubts about what might be most suitable for your companion.

Don’t leave during peak-hour traffic

Plan your departure time and route to your destination to avoid rush hour.

Do have patience and enjoy your trip

Remember that you’re not the only driver on the road, so don’t be selfish or reckless.

Don’t be a hero – share the driving!
